John Yearwood is editorial director for diversity & culture, leading efforts to diversify the newsroom’s staff and heading its fellowship and journalism institute programs. He previously served as POLITICO’s global news editor and deputy editor, global trade & agriculture.

Before joining POLITICO, Yearwood spent almost 13 years as the Miami Herald’s world editor. Before the Miami Herald, he was national/international editor at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in Texas. He spent a decade as a senior staff writer with the Dallas Morning News prior to the Star-Telegram.

Yearwood is a past two-term chair of the Vienna, Austria-based International Press Institute, the oldest press freedom organization in the world.

He is a frequent guest speaker and moderator, facilitating gatherings around the globe. Among them: African Import-Export Bank’s annual meeting, Seychelles; Conference of Paris; Asian Leadership Conference, Seoul; Toronto Global Forum; Good Pitch, Mumbai; and UN Alliance of Civilizations, Cairo.

Yearwood is the recipient of numerous honors, including Luminary of the Year, Miami-Dade County Pillar Award, ICABA Community Builder Award, COSMOS Distinguished Citizen Award and the Media Trailblazer Award.

He has a degree in Political Science from the University of Connecticut.
