Katy Murphy is the California editor. She was previously deputy editor and a reporter covering consumer regulations with a focus on data privacy. Before joining the team, she ran the Capitol bureau for the The Mercury News and East Bay Times and, before that, covered K-12 and higher education in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than a decade.

A Chicago-area native, she graduated from the University of Notre Dame and had stints in Puerto Rico and Indiana before moving West.
