Ryan Hutchins

Ryan Hutchins is deputy managing editor for states. Hutchins manages state-level policy and political coverage, overseeing reporters and editors based in seven states and Washington, D.C. He also leads The Fifty, POLITICO’s premier platform for examining how state and local leaders are shaping our shared future. Hutchins was previously bureau chief in New Jersey, where he established a six-reporter team covering state government and politics. Hutchins joined POLITICO in 2014 as a reporter covering real estate policy, economic development and infrastructure for Capital New York, a precursor to POLITICO’s New York outpost.

Hutchins previously worked at The Star-Ledger, New Jersey’s largest newspaper, where he was a Statehouse reporter in Trenton following stints on several local news beats. He wrote about former Gov. Chris Christie, his rocky oversight after Hurricane Sandy and the eventual collapse of the Republican’s career following the so-called Bridgegate scandal. He also covered environmental policy, the state prison system and the flailing effort to save Atlantic City’s casino industry.

Hutchins has also worked for the Times Union in Albany, N.Y., and the Press-Republican in Plattsburgh, N.Y. He studied journalism at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. He was born and raised in upstate New York.
