Sen. Martinez hits CBC on Castro confab

There was bound to be fallout from the Congressional Black Caucus' unannounced visit with Fidel Castro, and Cuban-born Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) is blasting his House colleagues for their "praise" of the ex-president.

Martinez is particularly upset that the CBC members -- led by Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) -- didn't spend much energy on Cuba's problems and its dissident population.

"Regardless of one’s position on U.S. Cuba policy, one would expect that any U.S .official or member of Congress visiting Cuba would have the courage to meet with members of Cuba’s struggling independent civil society and raise concerns about the regime’s systematic violation of human rights with Cuban officials," Martinez said.

And it turns out that Speaker Nancy Pelosi didn't even know the House delegation was meeting with Castro.

On Larry King Live last night, Pelosi was asked if she knew about the trip and the private audience with Castro -- his first with U.S. officials since he fell ill and relinquished his presidency.

"I knew that they were going on the trip. I didn't know if they were going to be meeting with Fidel Castro," Pelosi told King. "I think that's a development that occurred once they were there."
